Ram Nath Kovind was taken out of the magic hat by the National Democratic Alliance for the coveted position of the President of India.
Playing the Dalit card, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on June 19 threw a surprise by nominating Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as the NDA’s choice for the President’s post, stunning the opposition, which accused the ruling party of unilateralism.
The criticism isn’t unfounded, for the BJP sent its emissaries to secure a blanket endorsement for its presidential nominee. However, the Opposition caught the NDA on the wrong foot by asking it to come up with names of its choices so that they could endorse or reject it.
Bharatiya Janata Party President Amit Shah announced the name of Kovind, 71, a er a nearly two-hour meeting of the BJP parliamentary board a ended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others, ending all suspense about the NDA’s candidature for the top constitutional post.
