The term 'work-life balance' has become a popular chant for all working professionals today. A world of different opinions continue to pervade our lives, with one actually affirming that there truly is no direct relationship between the parallel worlds we live in.

A Matter Of Strategic Timing!

Remember the movie 'Pretty Woman' where Richard Gere, a successful business tycoon gets invigorated by taking a BY URVI ARADHYA day off his hectic business schedule, walking barefoot on the green grass, basking in the sunshine, and just 'be'- ing.' And, a mere mortal from the ordinary world introduces him to the simple joys of daily life, and makes him realize what it takes to de-stress and live a balanced life. The term 'work-life balance' has become a popular chant for all working professionals today. A world of different opinions continues to pervade our lives, with one actually affirming that there truly is no direct relationship between the parallel worlds we live in. If this holds true, one wonders why this term was invented way back in 1801. France for instance, holds the record for having the second-shortest working week in the world (Denmark leads the pack with 39 hours per week) with an average of 41 hours. And, Parisians on an average, work for 30 hours and 50 minutes in a week, while residents in Lyon work for 31 hours and 22 minutes in the same period. Ironically, France still does not feature on the list of the top ten countries which boast of the 'best' system of work-life balance!

An Aggrieved Woman?

The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition And Redressal) Act, 2013 has mandated that it is illegal to sexually harass women, working or otherwise, at the workplace. However, it certainly is strange that the law did not feel the need to include men, and, also did not clearly demarcate the boundaries of liability for the employer.
