Although a mature papaya tree can withstand a temperature of -2°C, production is only recommended in areas where the average daily minimum temperature during mid-winter never falls below 5°C. Ideally, the night temperature should not drop.
The optimal temperature range for papayas is between 25°C and 28°C. A temperature higher than 36°C and lower than 17°C for an extended period will adversely affect the growth of the trees.
At an average day temperature of 23°C, the fruit will take approximately six months to mature. The lower the temperatures, the longer the fruit will take to mature, and vice versa.
The trees enter a recovery stage after winter and produce few flowers during this period. Production normally peaks between September and November.
