Ever since the lockdown, SpiceJet has been operating cargo flights transporting vaccines, medicines, perishable items and more to domestic and international destinations

SpiceJet at the top as cargo carrier

The Covid-19 pandemic caused widespread disruption and losses to the aviation community worldwide but Indian carrier SpiceJet and it's Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh thinks otherwise. Singh saw an opportunity in the crisis that Covid presented and today, SpiceJet is the top cargo carrier in the country. Ever since the lockdown began in March 2021, SpiceJet’s along with SpiceXpress have been at the forefront of transportation of medical supplies to different destinations around India and the world. Since March 2021 and till the time of filing this report, SpiceJet has operated 15,469 cargo flights and carried around 1,30,788 tonnes of cargo.

Recently, SpiceXpress the cargo wing of the low-cost carrier operated its first-ever multimodal cargo flight. The multimodal operation had been done way back in 2018 when Dhaka airport faced capacity constraints.

At that time, bonded cargo garments again had been flown out of Kolkata airport after it had crossed the India-Bangladesh border by truck.

On the SpiceXpress flight was 48 tonnes of cargo, most of it branded garments from Dhaka to Spain. The cargo used road and air to reach Spain. The garments were sent from Dhaka through Petrapole to Kolkata airport by road. From there, a SpiceXpress freighter picked it up for Delhi. And it was from Delhi, that a SpiceXpress Airbus A340 cargo plane flew the consignment to Spain.

MULTIMODAL CARGO SERVICE WILL ACTIVELY AND EFFECTIVELY CONTRIBUTE IN STREAMLINING CARGO SHIPMENT ACROSS VARIOUS DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL SECTORS, REDUCE COST AND ENSURE SELF-RELIANCE, HELPING REALIZE OUR PRIME MINISTER’S VISION OF AN ATMANIRBHAR BHARAT.”
