Believe it or not, the electric car is not an invention of modern times; electric cars have been around since the 1800s and were more popular than combustion engine cars in the late 19th century. The scenario changed with the arrival of Ford's cost-efficient assembly line and the wider availability of fossil fuel, which ultimately pushed electric cars into oblivion. But it was an American upstart that brought attention back to battery-powered cars and their benefits a century later. A little more than a decade ago, Tesla a tiny California-based company helmed by an eccentric genius turned into a juggernaut that changed the entire landscape of the automobile industry with the launch of the Model S all-electric luxury sedan and singlehandedly started the electric car revolution across the globe.

While India continues to await the arrival of the celebrated electric car manufacturer, other major automobile brands have rushed in to seize the opportunity by offering compelling options to buyers who are shopping in the luxury EV segment. India has had a relatively slow start when it comes to transitioning to electric cars, but things are beginning to change rapidly. German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz in continuing with its tradition as a pioneer, became the first company to launch a luxury EV in India when it introduced the EQC electric SUV two years ago.
