IT WAS A BIG GAMBLE by Mercedes-Benz to launch the extended wheelbase E-Class in India and from what we gather, the risk was worth taking as the E-Class is selling very well with over 1000 units booked since its launch. The launch edition E only got the V6 diesel and the four-cylinder petrol engine but now Mercedes has got its new four cylinder diesel motor too. This engine is the more attainable and the more sought-after variant for buyers in this segment so we took it for a quick highway run.

There’s a lot riding on this motor. You could call it Mercedes’ bread and butter engine as it is going to see a wide range of applications across the portfolio with every car and SUV, except for the German carmaker’s flagship products finding them under the hood. It’s a significant move that the E-Class gets it first as with the E, Mercedes wants to put its best step forward as the segment is a high selling one in India.
