ALMOST 3000 MILES in with my V90 plug-in hybrid and I’m well beyond the giddy first impressions phase; I’m still very much falling in love but, to torture the analogies a bit further, still weighing up whether I could commit to this sort of car for life.

Where there were questions, though, I now have some answers; lord knows what the drivers prior to delivery had been up to, but the 30-something average economy readout that it arrived with has been swept away. Instead, I frequently see closer to 50mpg, and even if I go on a long journey without an opportunity to charge up the battery, I get 42-44mpg when the petrol engine is working alone.
