According to ancient Greek mythology, each and every day, god Helios would drive his chariot along the skyline from one side of the earth clear to the other, with the blazing sun riding shotgun—and this is how the sun would rise and set.

Historically Speaking - Beth Myers' '32 Ford Two-door Phaeton

Phaethon, the once-illegitimate son of Helios, secretly took the Chariot of the Sun one day on a pseudo joy ride (he was granted permission by his father despite his objections). His youth and inexperience proved fatal, as he lost control of the horses and was subsequently killed—and in the process of the melee, created the Milky Way above and turned the African continent below into a desert.
