Fresh from debuting her innovative LED design for Artemide at Euroluce 2019, designer Pallavi Dean talks lightbulb moments, and about learning and living in the moment.
How did your collaboration with Artemide come about?
It was a chance encounter with Artemide’s CEO, Carlotta de Bevilacqua, who was in Dubai for Dubai Design Week 2018. We were on a panel together about women in design, and we just clicked. Artemide collaborates with the best architects in the world, like Bjarke Ingels and Jean Nouvel, so it’s humbling to be in their orbit. To be fair, the global design media kept asking Carlotta the same question: “Who’s this designer from Dubai and why are you working with her?” She told them: “Pallavi is an extraordinary woman with great professional, cultural and social commitment. We share a special empathy; we strive for the same passions and values, both in life and design.” I can live with that description.
How did you find the experience of Euroluce at Milan Furniture Fair last month?
One word to sum it up would be surreal. I remember going to the Fair as a young designer and thinking “wouldn’t it be amazing to launch a product here on this international stage” – so I’ve now ticked that box! Joking aside, it was great watching people interact with the product in real-time. The surprise and delight when they discovered it had a music system… That’s the power of design: it can change someone’s state of being, one of the many reasons I do what I do!
Interweave is flexible and highly symbolic; what was your inspiration for this LED lighting system?
