A 100th birthday is always something special – even more so when you’re one of the most influential, celebrated and decorated architects of the 20th Century.
IM Pei turned 100 on 26 April 2017, another milestone in the remarkable life of the Chinese American architect whose glittering career has spanned seven decades.
Born in Guangzhou, China, Pei moved to the USA to study at the University of Pennsylvania (architecture), MIT (engineering) and then the Graduate School of Design at Harvard.
Pei began his architectural career when he was recruited by New York real estate magnate William Zeckendorf in 1948 – but just seven years later established an independent company, I. M. Pei & Associates (which finally became Pei Cobb Freed & Partners).
