“The Artist Must Create a Spark Before He Can Make a Fire, and Before Art Is Born, the Artist Must Be Ready to Be Consumed by the Fire of His Own Creation.” Auguste Rodin
Sarah Dolby is the embodiment of a life lived in artistic expression. She isn’t just an artist, a painter, she lives, breathes, eats and sleeps art. As a down-to-earth, practical, family-oriented woman, she has to carefully balance and carve out her day in order to consistently create the fantastical, imaginative, gothic characters she is known for.
Since childhood she’s loved all things magical and has spent most of her life floating between reality and her imagination – “away with the fairies” as she says. She was caught up with tales of the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson in those days, and her early work was influenced by the likes of Frida Kahlo, John Currin and John Singer Sargent. These days, the filmmaking genius of Tim Burton and Guillermo Del Toro has impacted her paintings.
