Sanitation For Socialisation

Architecture + Design

|

September 2016

Gandhiji devoted himself to the cause of sanitation and hygiene, because the root cause of untouchability and social hierarchy lied in the menial occupation of manual scavenging of human waste. Also, the lack of sanitation was the reason for illness and poverty.

Sanitation For Socialisation

He therefore laid stress on self cleaning of toilets and dignified toilets by calling them like shrines for best thoughts. Even today, nearly forty percent of India’s population is deprived of proper sanitation facilities. In order to change people’s mindset about toilets and raise awareness about sanitation issues, a toilet park is created at the ashram premises.

The toilet park has a display of different life scale installations of alternative toilets with non-centralised waterborne sewage disposal system. This is now being used as a ground for meetings and gathering for lectures and film screening on social issues. It is also provided with modest outdoor restaurant set up consisting of preparation counters and eating tables.
