Designer Priyanka Shah's studio in Surat by AD100 firm Studio ii is built to be a loving embrace for old trees, new ideas, and slow, sustainable design.

- RAJASHREE BALARAM

Open Heart

These days, a carpet of pink tabebuia and yellow amaltas flowers greets Priyanka Shah every morning outside her studio Shed. It's hardly surprising that the 30-year-old furniture designer-who is known for her inventive concepts with salvaged wood-does not take the seasonal preening of nature for granted. Shah's studio sits on one end of the compound of her family home in Surat, and the cluster of trees around the site is more than a decade old. "Twelve years ago, they were brought in as saplings in nursery bags that were left lying around in the compound; my parents never got around to planting them in pots. Today, they have turned into a private forest that often makes me pause and reflect."
