ARAKU COFFEE IS THE PRODUCT OF OVER TWO DECADES OF WORK BY THE NA NDI FOUNDATION. AND ITS FLAGSHIP CAFÉ BY SHONAN PURIE TREHAN MAKES SUSTAINABILITY LOOK SEXY.
The Bengaluru flagship café of Araku Coffee, a brand that traces its origins back to a tribal fair-trade cooperative from Andhra Pradesh, looks anything but an offshoot of an NGO. It's slick, minimal, and all-white with details that speak a sophisticated design language. It's the handiwork of Studio LAB founder and AD100 designer Shonan Purie Trehan, known for her commitment to sustainability. An ethic that she shares with co-designer Jorge Zapata, founder of the New York-based firm JAZ Architect. "We wanted people to linger, to have a sense of serenity, calmness, and community" says Zapata. Trehan adds, "It wasn't like we were designing an aesthetic. We were designing an experience."
