Trout & Salmon
|January 2018
The strangest things can inspire us to tie a fly, writes Ross Macdonald.

FLY-TYERS ARE AN odd bunch. Imagining new flies – and how to apply new materials – is a full-time obsession. Many flies turn out to be rubbish. I’ve certainly created several “innovations” that will remain in my workshop, never to see the light of day. But every now and then, in keeping with the infinite monkey theorem about monkeys at typewriters eventually writing Shakespeare, we produce something that makes it out of the vice and on to the water.
