The rush is on to find feasible management options for eucalyptus leafroller (Strepsicrates spp.), which has been confirmed in commercial forestry plantations in the KwaZuluNatal Midlands, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
South African forestry scientists are working hard to identify the exact species, its origin and its host association.
Brett Hurley, an associate professor in zoology and entomology at the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) at the University of Pretoria, said the female moths seemed to prefer laying their eggs on young trees across a broad range of Eucalyptus species.
