Land expropriation fears unfounded – Prof Ruth Hall

The motion recently adopted by the National Assembly, in Parliament, to establish an ad hoc Constitutional Review Committee to review and amend Section 25 of the Constitution to allow for the expropriation of land without compensation has been met with both great anxiety and elation by South Africans.

However, according to Prof Ruth Hall of the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies, the apparent agreement between the ANC and EFF on the motion was “a false consensus”.
“The EFF is asking for land expropriation without compensation across the board, while the ANC, having had the power to expropriate for many years and not doing so, is now saying that [government] wants expropriation without compensation to be one of the mechanisms at [its] disposal.”
