Sam Wildes introduces SYMEON PITSILLIDES, a 34-year-old budgerigar breeder from Cyprus, whose collection at home embraces a phenomenal array of colour and varieties.
BUDGERIGARS
A BUDGERIGAR breeder from the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, Symeon Pitsillides has just celebrated his 20th year breeding budgerigars. Symeon and I began talking through Facebook, because we share the same interest in specialist variety budgies. Symeon has come to England for the past two years to visit family and, while over here, he has made the effort to come and visit me. I have also taken him to see other breeders during his visit.
Sam Wildes: How did you get started in the hobby?
Symeon Pitsillides: My first budgies were a birthday present from my godfather at the age of 13.
SW: How many budgerigars do you currently keep?
SP: About 100 or so birds. This varies from 100-150 adult birds each year.
SW: How many do you breed a year?
SP: Usually about 200 youngsters per year. If I have a good season, the total might even reach 250.
SW: How many cages and flights do you have and use?
