It is a busy spring season. The storm damage at Dennett's Wharf is under repair with plans for a summer reopening. Several stories cover the activities of Castine's select board and the issues on deck ahead of the town's May 11 town meeting. Spring sports have commenced at George Stevens Academy, while they wind down at Maine Maritime Academy. On a light note, we have a story (and, yes, a photo!) of a spring peeper, one of many aptly named chorus frogs now in full song each evening.

The week's news captures a wide array of stories, from coverage of the solar eclipse to an ice storm, Castine's town dock replacement work, and a Maine Maritime Academy graduate who is leading the NTSB's investigation of the Baltimore bridge collapse. Storm repairs on the Castine town dock continue; we have the updates and photos. Maine Maritime Academy receives funding to plan further collaborations with Bath Iron Works for student training. And, we profile the career of a longtime MMA custodian who recently retired.

 The Maine Maritime Academy sailing team competes in a national regatta off the southern California coast, winning the Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup. Two months to the day of the January 10 storm that caused so much damage, a March 10 storm brings flooding all over again. We report on disaster relief funding in the pipeline designed to mitigate winter storm damage. And Penobscot voters approve a new ordinance regulating aquaculture on the Bagaduce River at the annual town meeting.

Food trucks in Castine? Questions of whether—or not—to have them, as well as where and when, continue to be discussed, without resolution. The Castine town dock repairs are underway. And, in local acronyms, MMA joins MIDA. See details in this week's coverage.


The Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball team won their regional conference championship and is headed for national competition. Penobscot has its election and annual town meeting coming up. The Castine select board has been busy with a variety of actions and decisions and attending a court hearing about a protection order request against two town officials. A Penobscot resident has been named as managing editor for the Penobscot Bay Press newspapers.

This is an issue full of Maine Maritime Academy news. Our report from the recent board of trustees meeting includes the major focus of getting more financial support from the state and increasing enrollment to cover a $2 million operating deficit. A story highlights the advantages of the Women Offshore mentorship program. Finally, our sports reporter covers the continuing advancement of the academy’s women’s basketball team through North Atlantic Conference post-season play.

In Castine, Maine Maritime Academy has the final permits to begin construction of pier facilities needed for the new training ship. The academy and town hosted a Scouts Klondike Derby. In the Patriot this week, photos show Maine Maritime Academy students clad in bathing suits standing next to the harbor. No, it’s not a file photo from last fall but rather coverage of the students’ participation in this year’s Polar Plunge fundraiser. In another water-related story, our coverage reports on the status of planned repairs to the town dock. Does Castine want food trucks in town? Many people at a recent public meeting said yes.

The extensive damage to the public wharf and waterfront in Castine was the subject of a visit from the FEMA team this week. We were there and have pictures. We have the basic information about candidates, voting details and town meeting date for the town of Penobscot.

In the aftermath of the January 10 and 13 storms, our coverage shifts to the continuing cleanup, assessment of damage, and identification of aid for recovery. We end our publishing year with an issue that we all enjoy sharing with you. It is our annual Christmas issue, featuring drawings and writing by area school children on the theme “What Christmas and the holidays mean to me.” The drawings convey delightful perspectives and capture what this season is all about. There is a feature story on the history of Christmas carols, our annual Christmas editorial and numerous holiday greeting ads from area businesses and organizations. We have a feature story on an experimental wave energy converter that has been installed in the bay off of Castine. And, there is a feature on the preservation of a once-commercial blueberry field in Penobscot. Just a reminder that content from this two-in-one issue will be up for two weeks, as we do not publish Christmas week. Our next issue comes out January 4.   

The location of the new Castine fire station continues to be in the news. We report on a meeting Town Manager Shawn Blodgett had with department volunteers. Results of a survey of department volunteers “suggested that 95 percent of volunteers indicated that having the station close to campus was somewhat important or very important to their decision to join and remain volunteers.” The storm through Monday dumped more than two inches of rain on the area, causing flooded roads in Penobscot. We have two pictures. The Castine school board has chosen Kate Noel to serve as its new chair. Also, don't forget to view Coming Events for holiday festivities you might like to attend.

The month begins with the first snowstorm of the year. Schools were closed December 4, and wet snow clung to trees, creating winter wonderland vistas captured by our photographers. We offer stories and photos of various holiday fairs and events. The Castine select board continues to hear community concerns surrounding the location of its future fire station. A special meeting on that topic is set for Thursday, December 14, at 6 p.m. in Emerson Hall. And, check out the week's Coming Events for upcoming holiday activities!

The Maine Legislature votes to consider a request to increase funding for Maine Maritime Academy. Penobscot residents vote in favor of universal health care for all Mainers at a recent referendum election. And WindowDresser volunteers gather at a community build to create custom window inserts that will help their neighbors stay warm and keep heating costs at bay.  

Maine Maritime Academy’s board of trustees convene with an agenda centered on fiscal sustainability. Penobscot residents vote in favor of creating a publicly funded healthcare plan that will benefit all Mainers. And, in a whirlwind week, MMA bids adieu to its fall sports season as its men’s and women’s basketball teams launch theirs on solid footing.


Castine’s Civil War monument is restored through a collaboration between the town and the historical society.
