Portugal is mourning the death of five firefighters who died in the line of duty in August. As the Algarve Resident hit the newsstands on Thursday (August 29), with a front cover story reporting on the deaths of four firefighters this month, another ‘bombeiro’ – a 21-year-old woman - had been killed combating a fire in Serra do Caramulo. Several fires have caused widespread destruction across many regions in the north of Portugal, leaving our firefighters completely exhausted. Associations representing firefighters have been complaining about lack of support from the government.
