Dozens of science and technology development payloads returned to Earth from the International Space Station (ISS) as SpaceX’s 29th Commercial Resupply Services
(CRS) mission, contracted by NASA, successfully concluded on December 22, 2023. More than 30 payloads sponsored by the ISS National Laboratory returned on this mission, many of which were life science investigations aimed at benefiting
humanity by improving care for patients on Earth. One among the payloads was an investigation from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), which studied microgravity’s effects on stem-cell derived brain organoids (lab grown replicas of human organs). While this might seem like science fiction, the story of organoids dates back to 1907. Fast forward to today, these tiny replicas of human organs are experiencing a dramatic surge in popularity, transforming the face of drug discovery research. Dubbed as powerful ‘human modelling systems’, organoids are paving the way for personalised medicines and shaking up the global drug development scene.

Can India Create 50K BIOTECH STARTUPS?

PUNE-BASED ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT CENTER (VENTURE CENTER) GAINS No 1 POSITION IN BIOSPECTRUM BIOINCUBATOR SURVEY 2020-21.
BioSpectrum India, a leading B2B media platform in Lifesciences space since 2003 has re-launched its ranking special edition in June 2019 after gap of 2 years. In this survey we looked at BioIncubators (both private and public) spread across India based on their achievements in the past financial year – 2020-21.
A detailed questionnaire (survey form) was sent to over 40 BioIncubators to capture the needed information for the year 2020-21 for the analysis. This
was done during April – May 2022. BioIncubators  shared information with us to the extent it was possible by them.

Indian biopharma industry HITS Rs 33K Cr WITH 13% GROWTH
Amidst the pandemic, the Indian Biopharma Industry, with over 300 companies, has witnessed a good growth of 13 percent, 2 per cent less than the previous year’s 15 percent growth rate. This growth was largely driven by the performance of the Indian biopharma companies which have done very well as against multinational companies. As a result, the Indian Biopharma Industry has crossed the Rs 33,000 crore mark for the year 2020-21 over the previous year’s figure of Rs 29,176 crore.
The Indian Biopharma industry, comprising hormones, insulin, blood products and vaccines recorded a sales revenue of Rs 33,067 crore for the year 2020-21.

Why’s BioPharma BREAKING R&D SHACKLES?
The Indian industry bore witness to biotech companies collaborating with vaccine manufacturers, vaccine technologies being transferred, licenses to manufacture several drugs granted to pharma companies, among other notable developments. These collaborations and partnerships have furthered R&D, commercialisation and distribution of several critical drugs throughout 2021.
