Demur Magazine - September 16 Fashion Week edition.

What a packed fashion week edition we have for you. We are delighted to be attending Africa Fashion Week London and Ibiza Fashion Festival this September and we have caught up with some of the designers showcasing at these two events We also visit our wonderful friends in New York at Nolcha Shows.

It always sounds a bit shallow and egotistical when people say ‘I Love Myself.’ You’ll often hear people say ‘she is so full of herself, how can she say that?’ and some people will resent you for saying that. I was watching a video clip with Oprah on YouTube and she was talking about how she was always so scared to put herself first instead of others. She said she had learnt that you can’t pour from an empty cup which is so true. It’s so important to take care of ourselves before we even think of others and that is not in some sort of self-centred ignorant way. 

As many of you who read this magazine are artists and creatives within various industries, it’s easy to fall into a trap where you just want to please everyone that you start to compromise yourself and eventually you lose who you are. Well, we don’t want to see any of that around here. This issue is called ‘I Am In Love With Me’ because we want you to take action and discover how much of a great person you are to fall in love with. It’s a bit weird at first because we have always known that it’s the other way around, other people are supposed to love you. It’s true you can receive love from other people but when those other people stop loving you, you still have yourself.

So, what you are going to do this month is a pick up a copy of Demur, tell everyone you need some alone time and get right to the bit where we talk about self-care tips for the creatives. Once you have armoured yourself with some self-love you can browse the subscription boxes that we have suggested as gift ideas for your Dad this Fathers’ Day. Dear Loyal Readers

I really can’t stand how two-faced the weather in this country is. Each morning you wake up and you never know what to expect or even how to dress for it. Still, it makes for a great icebreaker. The weather seems to be the topic of interests for everyone and I reckon you should use that as your icebreaker when you decide to visit our lists of amazing bars that we have compiled for you in this issue. If you are unable to go bar hoping this time because you have other pressing issues on your mind, such as ‘what am I going to do with my life now that I have finished my Fashion Degree…’, you can flip through and read our ‘Life Beyond The Glamorous Fashion Degree’ piece to see what your options are after your course.

My oh, my have we got an issue for you here. We know it’s spring time, but the English weather forces us to believe otherwise. We have prepared an edition that will help you enjoy Spring no matter what the weather is like. 

For those of you who prefer to stay indoors and binge watch tv shows, we have a selection of shows that will make for great ice breaker topics and those who like to admire tv hunks from afar, we have Chris Santos from the Girlfriend Experience talking about his latest movie, Perfect and how he stays looking trim. 

We don’t just take things at face value here at Demur and accept them as they are. We give you our verdict on fashion week and if you read through the whole piece you will see just how much we really do look out for the independent guy (don’t forget us in your thank you speeches). It wouldn’t be spring without a festival or two taking place. Our list of festivals this spring/summer season will make you want to go to all of them and if you can, why not? There are some really big stars worth seeing live, hitting the festival circuit this year. I was also very proud to read about the back story of Strawberries & Creem, I’m sure you will be too. 

We visit the streets of Harlem to talk to hip-hop artists JP Reynolds about his loses and gains and mumble rap. Things get real as we discuss protest marches and their effect on matters of protests.

I hope this enough to keep you occupied and out of trouble.

I never understood what being a woman meant until I become one myself. There are things I use to hear my mum say when I was younger and, in my head, I would always think why is she overreacting? As I have grown older I now realise it’s a little tough being a lady. The role itself comes with a great responsibility and unnegotiable terms and conditions in small print that no one can really prepare you for. Being a woman is a great privilege although it doesn’t always feel like it. Yet every single day women everywhere are getting up and kicking ass. As it is Women’s Day this, month millions of people across the world will take time out to celebrate the woman and it’s a great honour to have a whole day reserved just for us. The trouble is it is often easy to forget to celebrate ourselves every single day that we are women. Fear not Demur is on the case.

6 months down and 6 more months to go. They say time flies when you are having fun. That’s how exactly how it’s been over here at Demur HQ. Through our growing pains we are striving as much as possible to have fun whilst doing it. 

With worldwide recognition, numerous partnerships and our pop-up shop coming up during fashion week in September, there is so much to be excited about. However, none of this is possible without the superb, A* class Demur team, the creatives who continue to work with us and you the readers who follow our journey and share our wins with us. We thank you for your ongoing support. With each month, each issue, each video, each post, there are more and more of you. 

We are pleased to confirm we are a media partner for Flux Exhibition taking place between 12th – 16th July. In this issue, you will see some of the artists exhibiting at the event. Dear Loyal Readers I recently attended a friend’s birthday shindig and got talking to another friend who was there. This young lady had recently quit her office job to follow a path she thought would make her happy. Although this young woman is perfectly happy with her decision and she is at peace with it, she is still surrounded by people questioning her choices. She has had people say to her, “Why would you quit a well-paid job to pursue something that may never happen? Should you be taking such risks at your age?” (We are still in our 20’s by the way) At Demur, you can count on us to uplift you and empower you. We stand for people following their dreams as ridiculous as that may be to others. As I sat down with my girls to plan our annual city getaway, news came of the recent vicious crime that was committed in London. An acquittance who overheard of our plans encouraged us to put our plans on hold whilst we waited for “the world to be right again.” When will that be, I thought to myself? 

Demur is a place of escape and a celebration of some the things that are right and enjoyable in this world. A picture can paint a thousand words and Cool Ras Art is helping us spread positivity as he shares his art and works with us. Jackie Got Lemons remind us that life is for living in colour and not living up tight and Yenifer Ubiera and her team present a wonderful editorial, showing we can co-existence in Contrast and still paint a beautiful picture. A Fashionable Culture is a life that is lived with no limits and to the fullest. Embracing and sharing everything you are and espousing some from others.

Dear Loyal Readers After a four month hiatus, we are back! A little while ago we sat down and we realised we needed to refresh ourselves. Here at Demur as you may have noticed, we are big on fashion, art, music and pretty much anything that makes us look well cultured. We also appreciate the striving creatives who sometimes go unnoticed in these industries. When we started Demur, the mission was to give these independent creatives a platform for their work to be seen. What we didn’t think about was how exactly we were going to do this. So, for the last four months, we have been working on how to better serve these independent creatives, how to improve the platform we are offering and provide better content for our readers. This time around the team is well equipped, focused and driven to take Demur and anyone else who wants to tag along to the top. There is more to Demur than just a free magazine. Demur is a state of being, it’s a way of living.

We have plenty of bits to keep you occupied this summer. How fitting is our editorial “Hot As Ice, A British Summer”? A few days of sunshine and then it rains on us. We are also preparing for Bestival the biggest festival this summer, with the likes of Sean Paul, Wiz Khalifa and Slamboree who are featured in this issue.

If you are finding it hard to work from home and an office space is out of the question at the moment, we’ve got some secret spots for you. We made friends with some mafia bosses at Artist Mafia, an online art gallery and record label based over in Las Vegas who promote independent art curators and music artists. Model Eni Maj offers some home truths on what it’s like to finally fall in love with the melanin skin. Noose & Monkey talks to us about a butler and a monkey.  So like we said we have plenty to keep you occupied this summer.

As if that’s not enough we finally have our online boutique launching on 1st September, so set a reminder in your diary and get ready to shop Demur!

16th June 10:30am that final bell goes off to announce that the exam is over and to put your pens down. Every person in that room has a sense of relief that it’s all finally over! NO MORE GCSE’S EVER AGAIN!!... Unless of course we fail and have to retake them in college (but we will not think about that for now).  

The sudden realisation that High School is over and you are free for a whole 87 days, is somewhat a good feeling but at the same time a heartbreaking emotion. 

For the first couple of days you start catching up on your overdue lie ins and binge watching all the TV shows and movies that you’ve missed out on during the last couple of months.  But then as the week goes by you realise you can’t waste your whole summer doing just that. You need a good summer story for when you start college to break the ice. 

So you start snapchatting all your friends saying how much you “miss” them and arrange plans to meet up during the week, but for some reason everyone already has their summer...
