You are with us during an eventful month. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year which falls on the 14th of April and Vesak festival commemorating the Birth, Enlightenment and the Great Demise of the Buddha occurs on the 29th, the full moon day of April. The New Year celebrations are centered around the household and the environs with the whole village participating and goes on for nearly two weeks with much fun and enjoyment.
Vesak is celebrated by Buddhists mainly in prayer and meritorious acts. The evenings however, come alive with sightseers crowding the streets to view and enjoy Vesak decorations and huge pandals, depicting the life of the Buddha illuminated with thousands of bulbs and jets.
A glimpse, of the existence worship of gods and cult of spirits and yakkas (evil) which is an integral part of the rural society.
Sri Lanka’s beautiful hill capital keeps peeping through the pages with happy reminiscences written by visitors who had enjoyed Kandy’s distinctive charms. Hotel Idyllic Vista tucked within the folds of the lush green hills of Hantana sums up Kandy’s beauty coupled with excellent guest services.
