Early May is always a bittersweet month, no matter what year, as we are confronted with memories of two fatal accidents which stole from us two of the sport’s most loved stars – Ayrton Senna (1 May 1994) and Gilles Villeneuve 8 May 1982) – we did our Ayrton homage in the last issue and this week we pay tribute to Gilles.

Kimi Raikkonen took one of the most popular victories in recent memory. Sebastian Vettel drove the race of his life from the back of the field to third place and Fernando Alonso reduced the points gap at the top of the table to ten points with two rounds to go.

The British Grand Prix weekend was a big one for Mark Webber, made even bigger a few day afterwards as Red Bull confirmed him for yet another year in the team.
The Silverstone weekend started off very wet - then all was forgiven as the sun shone brightly for the race itself, which turned out to be an intriguing affair as Webber turned the tables on Alonso.

Incredibly, Montreal delivered the seventh winner out of seven races. Lewis Hamilton - love him or not - thrived on the script that fate dished out to him, dealing with the circumstances with a new found maturity.

This past May 2012 was 18 years since Ayrton Senna died at Imola. His legend continues to grow, aided by the recent release of the documentary on his life which has given a  new generation of F1 fans - perhaps unborn back in 1994 - insight into one of the greatest and most ruthless drivers in the history of the sport.

Prior to the Bahrain Grand Prix world champions Red Bull and Sebastian Vettel were being written off. They simply were not the dominant force of a year earlier. In Bahrain the downfall theories went to shreds as Vettel bounced back to secure a hard fought and deserved victory. He also took command of the points standings, while his main rivals: McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes faltered. The F1 circus heads to Europe with four different winners out of four races, and the closest contest in ages to enthrall fans. It’s is always great for F1 when a driver wins his first grand prix, a coming of age no matter how young or old the driver is - in this instance, after another action packed race, Nico Rosberg finally did the business. Rosberg’s victory in China for Mercedes on Sunday made him only the third son of a winning Formula One driver to triumph in the sport since the championship started in 1950. Graham Hill and Damon Hill, Gilles Villeneuve and Jacques Villeneuve - now Nico and Keke Rosberg. Both Villeneuve and Hill (of junior variety) went on to become world champions....
