YAMAHA MT-09 - If you like your bikes nutty, naked and packed full of punch, you'll love the fourth-generation Yamaha MT-09.

Ten years ago, I found myself a part of the maddest, baddest, and arguably most illegal motorcycling I've ever a put my name to.

YAMAHA MT-09 - If you like your bikes nutty, naked and packed full of punch, you'll love the fourth-generation Yamaha MT-09.

The gig was called the Dark Dog Moto Tour, crossing from the north to the south of France over seven days, littered with road races, time trials, and (too many) pigs trotters for us hungry, tired competitors.

It was nothing short of bonkers, with rolled cars, crashed bikes and the occasional police chase for good measure. Befittingly, I had an equally bonkers bike to power me through in the shape of Yamaha's then box-fresh, audacious MT-09.

And that's when my love affair with this absolute headbanger began. Back then, there was nothing else on the market quite like it, blurring the lines between a motard, a naked and a sportsbike... or something like that. Here was a bike that couldn't be easily pigeon-holed - and which was half of the appeal.

Big torque, big wheelies, and a practical, comfy riding position helped sell the dream to the masses in a way Yamaha could have probably never imagined. Fast-forward a decade and the brand now claims to have sold more than 200,000 units globally, and for 2024 there's a new fourth generation on the cards, and I couldn't wait to see if it was as mental as I hoped.

Having bagged the golden ticket, I headed out to Lanzarote where we'd get the chance to put this new offering through its paces around the volcanic isle, but not until we'd got better acquainted with its new spec and tech. Building on the foundations of the gen three's uprated engine, frame, and sharper performance, the focus of the gen four is best described as the polishing of this rare gem, kitting it out with a raft of smart gizmos and refinements.

SPORTSBIKE SURPRISE FROM SUZUKI...2026 GSX-R1000R

Sometimes, when you see a 'new' bike in the mag, we've known about it for ages. Maybe not all the precise details, but it's been pretty obvious what's on the way and what it's likely to be all about.

RC30:HONDA'S HOMOLOGATION HERO

The A4 piece of paper on the fuel tank left there by its owner contained a potted history of the bike, the knack of how to start it, and a few of its quirks to look out for, my particular favourite being: “Front brake pads are about 20 years old, so pretty f***ed, and the rear brake does little but make the wheel dusty.\"

BSA'S BACK

Now, even we're not quite old enough to really remember BSA as a bike maker. The original firm closed down back in 1971, with the Birmingham Small Arms brand disappearing into the mess that was the British motorcycle industry back then. The name lived on through various owners and is now under Indian ownership, with the giant Mahindra conglomerate as the ultimate parent.

NEXT-GENERATION NORTON

Norton's new 1200cc sportsbike is nearly ready to break cover, and it's shaping up to be an absolute weapon. After months of whispers, blurry spy shots and internet pub-talk, the Solihull crew has just ticked off a major milestone: the big boss of TVS Motor Company, Sudarshan Venu, has been out thrashing it round a private track in the UK. And if that's not a green light for excitement, we don't know what is.

V4 TRICOLORE: NEXT-LEVEL...

If the RC30 is the epitome of smoothness and refinement, the Panigale is the very definition of violence and overwhelming levels of performance. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t refined or unsophisticated because it is all of those things, which — on the road, at least — is one of its greatest tricks... out of many.
