NEW GENEALOGY

Who Do You Think You Are?

Mon, BBC1 HD, 9pm (times vary)

Olivia Colman’s long-held assumption that her ancestry was ‘fairly boring’ is proved spectacularly wrong in this week’s episode of Who Do You Think Are?

The award-winning star of Broadchurch, Peep Show and The Night Manager delves into her mother Mary’s family tree and discovers both Indian and French ancestors as well as a marital scandal. Here, she reveals all…

What did you want to find out?

I grew up in Norfolk and knew the Colmans were always there forever, but I didn’t know where my mum’s family came from. I was interested in the people that have gone before me and their loves and losses.

Your four-times great-grandfather, Richard Campbell Bazett, divorced his first wife in the early 19th Century, but things were complicated, weren’t they?

Yes. His wife Margaret was having a fling and he applied for an Act of Parliament to get divorced. But he made a big deal about her being unfaithful while he was having it away with a woman called Sarah, who he married. What a hypocrite!

Richard and Sarah’s son, Charles, married Harriot Slessor. What was it like to visit India, where Harriot was born?

I hadn’t a clue that India played a part in my family
