If you're thinking about moving to a 55+ community, you're not alone: More than 2 million Americans choose senior living for the friendships, worry-free maintenance, healthcare support and peace of mind it provides. Here, experts share tips for finding a community that fits your budget, reflects your personality and supports your future—so you truly feel at home.

Choosing the right retirement community

Take a peek behind the curtain...and have a meal!

When evaluating a retirement community, the details that shape daily life often matter more than the amenities.

Experts recommend visiting at multiple times of day to see the community in action. “Stop by at 8AM for breakfast and again around 4PM between meals,” says Shari Ross, senior living consultant and author of Senior Living Made S.I.M.P.L.E. “Eat a meal, talk to residents—do they seem happy and engaged? Trust your instincts: If something feels off, it probably is.”

It’s also crucial to ask about the behind-the-scenes aspects that affect everyday living. Ross suggests checking for things like 24/7 on-call staff, medication management and potential conditions that could lead to unexpected cost increases—such as new healthcare needs, required care upgrades, renovations to your home or apartment or changes in community policies.

Find your ideal 'financial fit'

Every retirement community is different, but financially they usually fall into one of two categories: rental or buy-in. Knowing the distinction can help you determine what's truly affordable for your lifestyle.

“Rental communities offer flexibility and lower upfront costs,” says Bruce Rosenblatt, elder care consultant. “These are ideal if you want the freedom to relocate or if you decide you aren’t ready for a long-term commitment.”
