Budget travel: 5 ways to save big if you aren’t going far

1 Snap up free admission

Visit your public library for passes that'll score you complimentary entry for yourself and a companion to nearby museums, zoos, state parks and more, says budget travel pro Jen Ruiz, author of 12 Trips in 12 Months (JenOnAJetPlane.com). “My local branch offers free family admission to more than a dozen sights in my area,” she says. You simply check out a pass, then keep it for a limited time—typically three to seven days.

Depending on the library’s rules, you'll either need to return it or just let it expire. Since libraries usually have a limited number of passes, which are given out on a first-come, first-served basis, try to arrive early in the day to snag one.

Also smart: “Look for free admission days,” adds Ruiz. Many attractions open their doors at no cost on a set day each month, like the first Saturday, or during certain hours, such as after 5 PM. Check their website for details.
