It's the most wonderful time of the year - so don't let aches, pains and sniffles ruin it

Celebrations might be ramping up, but party time doesn't mean you're immune to annoying ailments. 'At Christmas, you can do too much, get tired, stressed, drink excessively and suffer,' says chief pharmacist Stuart Gale. And while you may not have to race off to A&E, it can put a dampener on your festive fun. Here's how to beat those health niggles and have a healthier party season...

Beat blisters

New shoes left you in agony? Never pop or drain a blister, as this can lead to infection. 'Instead, use a blister plaster to protect it,' says podiatrist Marion Yau. To help prevent further ones, use plasters on areas prone to rubbing. Plus, choose breathable, cotton socks for hygiene on days when you're not partying and change socks daily.

Zap a cold sore

There's never a good time to get a cold sore, but especially if you have a big event on the horizon. In pain? Apply ice. 'It gives temporary pain relief,' says former dentist Dr Rashmi Byakodi. Wrap an ice pack in a towel and press it firmly against the sore until it feels numb.
