CAMILLA FOSTER ON VITAL APPOINTMENTS EVERYONE OVER 60 SHOULD KEEP
-
THE new year is the perfect time to tackle health admin that you put off before Christmas festivities began.
“While genetics play a role, advancing years, environmental exposure and lifestyle choices can significantly impact our wellbeing,” says Dr Angela Rai, GP at The London General Practice.
“Advanced screening techniques, expert advice and timely interventions can help you stay proactive about your health, whether you're in your 60s or your 90s.”
Here are eight health checks to tick off your to do list as you head into 2026...
1. NHS HEALTH CHECK
The NHS Health Check is a free health check designed to identify early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia.
It's offered to people between the ages 40-74 in England every five years who have no preexisting diagnosis of these conditions.
“It involves a blood pressure check, cholesterol and blood glucose tests, BMI measurement and a lifestyle discussion about factors such as diet, exercise, smoking,” explains Dr Rai. “It's important as it detects risk factors early, enabling preventive measures before serious illness develops.”
You can also request a blood pressure and cholesterol check annually from your local healthcare provider.
Wales has its own range of health screening programs and personal-ised tools, such as the “Add to your Life” online check for over-50s, all managed by Public Health Wales.
2. VACCINATIONS
Viruses are rife this time of year, so it's important to stay up to date with vaccinations.
The flu vaccine, the COVID-19 booster, the pneumococcal vaccine and the shingles vaccine are the main jabs on offer at the NHS.
