A LOT of people may be unaware that Wells Town Hall is the annual location of the Hilliard Society of Miniaturists’ International Miniature Exhibition.

Miniature artwork hidden away in the heart of city

This exhibition is a hidden gem attracting entries and visitors from across the United Kingdom and further afield. Annual exhibitions have been taking place in the heart of Wells for over 40 years.

The Hilliard Society was founded by Sue Burton, a gallery owner in Wells, and miniaturist Rosalind Pierson (RMS, HSE, MASF), its inaugural exhibition held in Wells in May 1982.

The name of the society was chosen as Nicholas Hilliard was a prominent West Country Elizabethan miniaturist portrait painter who was born in Exeter in 1547.
