May 15, 2025

Summer got off to a splashing start as Shepton Mallet Lido officially reopened for the first swim of the season, welcoming back swimmers of all ages to the much-loved open-air pool.

Delighted to celebrate reopening of town pool

Local MP Tessa Munt joined the celebrations, spending the afternoon with the community to mark the occasion.

Ms Munt, MP for Wells and Mendip Hills, was on-site to see the lido's accessible facilities and experience the community spirit: "Spaces like Shepton Mallet Lido are what help keep our communities connected, healthy and thriving. It's more than swimming - it's about giving people of all ages and backgrounds access to outdoor exercise, fresh air and community. I'm thrilled to join in this weekend and celebrate everything this pool represents for the town."

From Sudan to Wells – mayor shares his remarkable story

IS truth sometimes stranger than fiction? Quite possibly. Could you write it? A ten-year-old boy from the Sudan, speaking no English, arrives in London in 1981. Forty-four years later he becomes the 651st Right Worshipful Mayor of a beautiful, quintessential tiny English city in the rural south-west of England. True or false? Totally true. We are talking about Councillor Louis Agabani and, of course, we are talking about Wells, and we are at the November meeting of Wells Civic Society, where Louis told his story.
