Chili take control of title race after crucial success
Wells Journal
|May 01, 2025
CHILCOMPTON Sports took a big step towards the Premier Division title with a 2-0 win at previous leaders Ilminster Town.
-
Rightly billed as a potential title-decider on Tuesday, Ryan Gay scored both Chili goals to move a point clear with a game to play. It’s another tough one though as they take on third-place Nailsea United on Monday.
Chili had set themselves up with a 3-1 success at Uphill Castle on Saturday.
Wells City Reserves moved themselves into the top five with an 8-1 mauling of bottom side Timsbury Athletic. Nick Fowler had a day to remember as he struck a double hat-trick, alongside goals for Richard Fowler and Alex Robertson. Wells will finish fifth regardless of what happens in their final game.
Goals from Jamie Brown and Jacob Holland edged Somerton Town to a 2-1 win over Clevedon United in their penultimate match of the campaign. They will finish 12th and at least five points clear of safety.
Ashcott have one final game to try and complete their incredible great escape in Division One after their 4-0 win over bottom side Saltford was cancelled out by Keynsham Town Reserves’ success at home to Minehead.

From Sudan to Wells – mayor shares his remarkable story
IS truth sometimes stranger than fiction? Quite possibly. Could you write it? A ten-year-old boy from the Sudan, speaking no English, arrives in London in 1981. Forty-four years later he becomes the 651st Right Worshipful Mayor of a beautiful, quintessential tiny English city in the rural south-west of England. True or false? Totally true. We are talking about Councillor Louis Agabani and, of course, we are talking about Wells, and we are at the November meeting of Wells Civic Society, where Louis told his story.
