WHEN Bobby Moore's family launched a legal bid to have the shirt he wore during the 1966 World Cup Final returned to them last year, it was estimated that the iconic red jersey might be worth £1million.

That might have been underselling it. Sports memorabilia these days is worth its weight in gold.

The 'Hand of God' shirt worn by Diego Maradona (below) and given to Three Lions midfielder Steve Hodge at the end of the infamous 1986 World Cup quarter-final went under the hammer for £7.1m.

Six shirts worn by Lionel Messi during Argentina's journey to become world champions in Qatar in 2022 netted £6.1m.

Yet according to Dave Amerman, Head of Revenue & Sports Consignment at Goldin Auctions, football memorabilia is still a relatively untapped market in a business where items from American sports sell for tens of millions of dollars.

Amerman said: "Soccer is the world's most popular sport and, in my opinion, we're just starting to see its true potential in the collectibles space.
