Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma Dir: Jane Schoenbrun, 106min

- HANNAH PETTIT

Review: SXSW thrills to this wild takedown of sex, slashers and Hollywood

In an era saturated with remakes — and think pieces bemoaning said remakes — Jane Schoenbrun’s latest film arrives at the perfect moment. Not only is Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma a love letter-cum-takedown of 1980s slasher tropes, it’s also a wildly and refreshingly original film of its own.

This is true to form for Schoenbrun, one of the most exciting directors working today. Schoenbrun’s previous feature, I Saw the TV Glow, was emotionally heavy and wholly unique, using a fictional TV show called “The Pink Opaque” as an allegory for the trans experience. Teenage Sex and Death is lighter and sillier, but no less complex or layered, and similarly uses a fictional media franchise within the film as an artifice for deeper questions about identity and sexuality.

It's an Epsom payday for Ekin-Su while Lily Allen and Ellie Goulding enjoy a Perfect night out

In true English style, plenty of event-goers braved the wet this week — whether at the Epsom Derby, where racegoers entertained themselves placing bets (Charlotte Tilbury put down an unsuccessful £500 to win on one; Elizabeth Day triumphed with two successful bets, and Ekin-Su raked in £11.30 of winnings), or on the terrace of J Sheekey, where an ice-sculpture orb depicting the Vivienne Westwood logo melted onto guests, including Isan Elba.

In a recent visit to Athens, we traipsed beneath generous orange trees and scraggy vines climbing crumbling walls; we attempted — and failed — to bypass several ice cream shops, those which bring such unruly flavours as to instantly beguile even the most full-up of characters.
