Why we always look forward to Monday morning
The Journal
|April 18, 2025
A WORD here about the wonderful women of Cullercoats, of whom I am in awe.
That last phrase does read slightly awkwardly but then if I rephrase it as follows 'whom I am in awe of, I am finishing a sentence with a preposition which I was always told was bad form.
Though having said that, I'm reminded of Winston Churchill's response when discussing this; yes, he agreed, we should not finish a sentence with a preposition and he affirmed that this was something up with which he would not put.
Back to the Cullercoats women. One of my weekly delights is to walk down each Monday morning to the Watch House Cullercoats wherein on offer is a cornucopia of treats, both sweet and savoury, both hot and cold.
The majority of this fodder is prepared and brought in by the same women of Cullercoats, though to be fair there'd also a sizeable contribution from Mickey English who chips in with some exotic delicacies.
Overall, the food comes in all shapes and sizes, as do the women. There is no charge for the grub on offer but we the visitors are encouraged to make a donation into the charity box, which I'm pleased to say virtually everyone does I have yet to spot a rotter who eats but does not contribute.
