An old Tyne and Wear Metro train has been scrapped in front of two emotional drivers.

- OWEN YOUNGER

The decommissioned carriage from the previous Metro fleet underwent specialist breakage work at the J Denham Metals Yard in Bishop Auckland.

Retired Metro driver Lesley Williams and current serving driver Jon Doughty made the trip, to observe firsthand how the old Metro carriages are taken apart and then stripped bare so that their metals can be recycled.

So far, Metro operator Nexus has decommissioned 35 of its old carriages.
