Speed cameras set for villages near A1

NORTHUMBERLAND County Council is planning to introduce speed cameras on a major road where traffic has increased in recent years as drivers look to avoid congestion on the A1.

The A697 runs parallel to the single-carriageway sections of the A1 north of Morpeth, passing through Longhorsley, Longframlington and Wooler.

Increased visitor numbers to the Northumberland coast in recent years have resulted in gridlock on the A1 bottlenecks in the county where the number of lanes change.

Some motorists have chosen to use the A697 to avoid queues.

However, residents in the towns and villages along the route have reported issues with speeding.
