Date set for demolition of shopping centre units

The planning department of South Tyneside Council has sanctioned an application for the Viking Centre situated in Jarrow town centre.

Sheet Anchor Investments Limited, the applicant, submitted a request for 'prior approval' earlier this year for the dismantling of a "series of retail units" within the shopping complex.

The proposed demolition pertains to a line of retail spaces near the Ellison Street entrance of the shopping centre and along Bede Precinct.

Those behind the project stated that the demolition encompasses "a number of units that are largely vacant, including the former Wilko building on the corner of Bede Precinct and Ellison Street"
