AS a boy in the 1940s and 1950s I was a great fan of the Sherlock Holmes’ stories. One peculiarity I noticed was that Holmes could post a letter in the morning and get a reply later the same day. No longer possible in my schooldays, let alone today. I received an email on Monday 17 June advising that my Senior Railcard had been despatched and to call them if not received in 10 days. I received it on Thursday 27 June. A full 11 days.
