THE tasty show featuring kitchen magicians who can whip candied miracles out of flour and sugar is inching closer to its climax.

I don’t pretend to know a madeleine from a macaron, and the last cake I baked tasted mostly of old carpet, apparently, so I find amazing the artistry of these professional patissiers. Heck, I'd be happy just to turn out a sponge that rises; I have no ambition to render my favourite childhood toy in cake form like they did in episode one (mine was Barbie and it feels like that would be weird).

Of course, their mastery of the sweet stuff has failed them too, even on tasks like creating choux pastry for a Paris Brest.
