THE judo world on Teesside is in mourning after the death of one its finest.

- By DAVE ROBSON

'Joe touched the lives of many and leaves behind a legacy'

For decades, this area's judo community was enriched by the skills and dedication of top coach Joe Glynn. Joe - who has died, aged 92 - began his own judo journey aged 16 and quickly fought through the ranks, earning his brown belt and carving out a fierce fighting career.

His competitive days were cut short in his 20s due to a major injury while fighting for his black belt.

In that incident he suffered extreme concussion and even lost his memory for a few years. But that unexpected setback became a blessing in disguise by leading Joe to a new calling - coaching.

He excelled as a coach, nurturing generations of judoka across all levels - from grassroots beginners to elite competitors. But possibly the most remarkable aspect of Joe's coaching career was his longevity.
