'Gran should be freed when she gets back to UK'
The Gazette
|October 23, 2025
A BRITISH barrister who has been campaigning for the release of Teesside death row grandmother Lindsay Sandiford says she should be released immediately upon her return to UK soil.
Dr Felicity Gerry KC, who visited Sandiford in Bali in 2015, has been tirelessly advocating for the UK Government’s assistance in bringing her home.
Sandiford, 69, has avoided execution after spending 12 years in Bali’s notorious Kerobokan prison for smuggling £1.6m worth of cocaine into the country.
After it was reported that Sandiford, who previously lived in Redcar, would be repatriated back to the UK, Dr Gerry asserted that she had served her sentence and should be set free without delay.
According to UK law, British prisoners can be repatriated to complete their sentences at home if an agreement can be reached between the two countries.
Given that the death penalty does not exist in the UK, there is a chance that Sandiford would have to serve any remaining prison sentence upon her arrival.
