Council pays out £130k for accidents

REDCAR and Cleveland Council has shelled out more than £130k in compensation for workplace accidents involving staff in the last three years.

In 2022/23 the local authority paid £54,044 towards liability claims, although the figure fell significantly in 2023/24 to £19,702.

During the last financial year - 2024/25 - the level of compensation paid went back up to £59,521.

A total of 16 accident claims were made against the council over the three year period, according to research by JF Law. The council said the number of claims received was “thankfully low” and pointed out that some took a lengthy period to resolve.

The most common cause of claims were slips, trips and falls.

Other categories included injuries caused by operating machinery and as a result of lifting an item.
