Irresponsible use of AI

Yesterday morning, firefighters received an alarm regarding a truck on fire in a street in Parola, Manila, but when they got to the place mentioned in the report they found the truck totally fine.

It turns out the photo of the truck on fire was generated by AI and shared to them by a netizen who claimed he also thought it was a real alarm.

"Siyempre, nagmamadali kami. Either na makasagi kami o ano. Siyempre, tumatakbo kami sa sunog. Tapos pagdating doon fake news pala. Mga ganon dapat mapanagot. Kasi hindi biro 'yung mga ginagawa nilang ganon,” said Recto Volunteer fire chief Samuel Fenix.

We salute the firefighters for responding, but this was essentially a waste of their time and resources --through no fault of their own, we hasten to add.
