A garbage issue

As of this writing at least three people have been confirmed dead while 12 others were injured and 35 still missing after a garbage landslide at the Prime Integrated Waste Solutions landfill in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City, last Thursday.

As per reports, the collapse that brought tons of garbage down at the facility's sorting area was attributed to heavy rains caused by Typhoon Tino and unstable ground following the earthquake last year.

There's no denying the tragic nature of this event. While chances are slim, we still hope for the rescue of those still missing and ask those carrying out rescue operations to take heart; it isn't easy to look through trash for survivors.

With that said, this incident should make us confront at least two issues.

First is how safe the Binaliw landfill is.
