Tree tribute to war heroes

CRICKET CLUB PROJECT TO MARK VE DAY ANNIVERSARY

A NORTHUMBERLAND cricket club has paid a touching tribute to its local war heroes with a commemorative tree project.

After World War II, 177 trees were planted around the cricket field in Ashington honouring the soldiers from the town who had died during the war, with the ground named the Ashington Memorial Cricket Ground.

Ahead of the 80th anniversary of VE Day, a project has taken place to place a personalised plaque alongside each of the trees to commemorate each person.

Work has also taken place to enhance the existing trees and to plant new ones to replace any which have been damaged or lost over the years.
