Key music figure receives highest civic honour

A RENOWNED musician credited with helping to bring the Mercury Prize to Newcastle has been awarded the freedom of the city.
London-born YolanDa Brown is delighted to have the Freedom of Newcastle
Councillors have agreed to award internationally acclaimed saxophonist YolanDa Brown Newcastle's highest civic honour, making her the first black woman to receive the accolade.
The 43-year-old is chair of the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the organisation behind the BRIT Awards and the Mercury Prize. She was also announced this month as a new patron of the Newcastle United Foundation.
City politicians heard on Wednesday night that she had fallen in love with Newcastle when she was taken to a match at St James’ Park by her soon-to-be husband in 2009 and had since become an avid Toon fan and a strong advocate for Tyneside.
