'It was like a war zone' - Residents speak out on Bonfire Night horror

The Chronicle

November 07, 2025

A TYNESIDE estate was 'like a war zone' as hooded yobs hurled fireworks at one another as Bonfire Night celebrations turned to terrifying chaos.

People living in the Meadow Well area of North Shields have told how they witnessed horrifying scenes on their doorsteps as the thugs terrorised their streets on Wednesday night.

Three-year-old Nevaeh Porter-Baggott was injured when a firework was thrown at her buggy as her family made their way to an organised Bonfire display earlier in the evening.

And videos circulating online show mindless yobs blasting rockets over Waterville Road at one another, seemingly with no thought for their own or other people's safety.

A number of fires were also lit around Waterville Road and Avon Avenue, with firefighters called out to extinguish one of the blazes.

Meanwhile, another video clip appears to show a group, wearing hoods, attempting to cut down a pole holding a CCTV camera with an angle grinder.

Yesterday, signs of the carnage that unfolded on the Meadow Well on Wednesday night can be seen clearly on the streets, with fires still smouldering and pavements littered with blackened debris.

And residents have told The Chronicle how their community was terrorised by young people with “no respect” for where they live.

Dave Shaw lives close to where a lot of the fireworks were set off, on Waterville Road.

He said he witnessed young people putting barriers in the road to make cars slow down or stop. And then when they did they were pelted with fireworks.
