That is Roy of the Rovers stuff

- BY FRASER WILSON

IT'S a goal that landed its scorer an unofficial knighthood.

Gray's boyhood dream became reality at Hibs

my best mate Murray lived across the road and I had two second cousins, Terry and Kevin, further down again.

“There was a wee poppy field in between the three houses and we'd be there all day, every day. Playing football.

“It’s probably similar to most young footballers.

“Playing with older boys, getting battered and kicked up and down the place.

“I encourage my son to go out and play because that was a big part of me and where my football career started, 100 per cent.

“It was two jumpers for goals, one in goal, guys crossing and one in the middle trying to score. Headers, volleys everything.

“If you missed, you went in goals. That was the rule.

“If you score, then the first person to lose say 10 goals got the ball booted at you!

“We were always pretending to be somebody.

“I was Kanchelskis, that was my thing. I was a Man United fan growing up. I played out wide. Terry was always David Beckham. Every time Beckham got a new haircut, he'd copy it.

“Back then if you'd asked us, 'What would you love to do?' it was always score a goal in the last minute of a cup final.

“Roy of the Rovers stuff.
